Separate a mention from an explicit citation
A brand can appear in an answer without a link to its site. A citation may point to an independent page that discusses the brand. Record both observations instead of treating either as proof of the other.
Read citations versus brand mentions before defining a client metric. This feature concerns sources in AI search answers, not academic bibliometrics or reference generation.
Keep the answer and the URL together
Review the exact answer, question, collection date and source URL. A cited domain alone hides which page supplied the context. Resolve ownership using the verified client domain and review subdomains and redirects when the distinction matters.
The platform readiness table describes the current validation state of each collection surface. A source link is not a partnership or provider endorsement. Use the original explicit link as evidence, rather than a guessed destination.
Find a gap you can actually investigate
Compare cited pages against the client’s relevant pages for the same buyer task. An absent owned citation can be an opportunity to investigate, but it is not evidence that an engine visited and rejected the client page.
Use the citation gap guide to distinguish access issues, missing direct answers, outdated claims and a genuinely different source task.
Turn a finding into reviewable work
Attach the observed answer and cited page to an action. State what needs to change, who owns it, and what would count as completion. An instruction such as “improve authority” is too broad to verify.
A useful task might be to update a supported comparison section, make evidence easier to inspect or correct a canonical declaration. Run a scoped GEO audit before attributing the gap to one cause.
Recheck without promising a citation
Repeat the approved question set and preserve the method version. Report what was observed, including citations to other domains and missing samples. Do not claim that a page update guarantees a citation or that a citation proves a commercial recommendation.
Bring the source evidence into a client report, where the reader can inspect the URL and understand the counting unit.
